If you've been putting off family photos because you're worried your toddler won't sit still or smile for the camera, you're definitely not alone. It's one of the most common concerns parents share with me before booking a session here in New Jersey. The good news? You don't need a perfectly behaved toddler to get beautiful, meaningful photos. In fact, some of the most treasured images come from simply letting kids be kids.
What If My Toddler Won't Cooperate During Family Photos?
If I had a dollar for every time a parent apologized before a session because they were worried their toddler "wouldn't smile," I'd probably have enough for a pretty nice camera lens.
Here's the truth: I don't expect toddlers to sit still, smile on command, or look at the camera every second.
Honestly, I hope they don't.
Some of my favorite images happen when kids are busy being exactly who they are. Running through the grass, hiding behind Mom's legs, collecting sticks, asking a hundred questions, or insisting on being carried. Those little moments tell your family's story far better than a perfectly posed picture ever could.
When I photograph families, I spend very little time asking everyone to look at the camera. Instead, I give simple prompts that get you interacting naturally. I'll ask you to tickle your child, whisper something silly, go on a little adventure together, or have a race to see who can get the biggest hug.
That's when the real smiles happen

Parents often worry that their child is "being difficult," but from my perspective, they're usually just being two years old. And that's okay. I plan my sessions around that.
I also build in plenty of flexibility. If your little one needs a snack, wants a cuddle, or needs a minute to warm up, we simply go with it. There's no pressure to perform.
Years from now, I don't think you'll remember whether your toddler looked at the camera for every photo. I think you'll treasure the way they wrapped their tiny arms around your neck, laughed while chasing bubbles, or reached up to hold your hand.
Those are the moments worth remembering.
